Mississippi John Hurt
Workshop - Fall Folk Festival 2007
This
is both a music appreciation and guitar instruction workshop.
Mississippi
John Hurt was one of the most popular of the rediscovered country bluesmen in
the 1960’s. Many of his songs have become country blues/folk classics like
Candyman, Frankie, Creole Belle, Louis Collins, Spike Driver Blues and many
more. This
workshop will explain who John Hurt was, his recording history in the 1920’s and
rediscovery in 1963, his songs and some of the stories behind them, and will
include a demonstration of Hurt’s playing style and unique chords and
fingerstyle methods. Guitar
tablature, lyrics, and instruction will be provided on some of John’s songs.
Instructor
Frank Delaney traveled to Hurt’s Home, Avalon, Mississippi, in July 2006 to play
at Hurt’s Blues and Gospel Festival and to do research for a special he will be
producing through KPBX for National Public Radio, and for a book he is writing.
The
workshop will include a slideshow of Frank’s pictures and videos from
Mississippi. Frank
is a Music Producer with KPBX Spokane Public Radio and is also the webmaster for
the Mississippi John Hurt Family foundation website www.msjohnhurtmuseum.com
